Fashion designer Paul Smith is synonymous with creating classic British tailoring and style but he has also designed quirky and sophisticated serveware. As the modern range comes to ACHICA we take a look behind the brand...
It all began…in Nottingham after Paul was encouraged by his father to work in a local clothing warehouse. By day he worked there and by night he dreamed of becoming a professional cyclist. However, his dream was cut short after being involved in a serious accident. During his recovery Paul became involved and interested in the world of art and fashion. When he returned to work he began to apply his newly acquired interest into creating colourful fashion displays for the showroom windows.
Momentum gathered…after Smith helped set up a friend’s fashion store in Nottingham. Once opened he stayed on to work as the manager and stuck it out until 1970 after which, he decided to go at it alone. He set up his own shop in a back alley of the city and ploughed his interest in fashion further by taking an evening course in fashion design. Eventually he began to sell his own designs in his shop.
Mood of the moment… By 1976 Smith had showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the label Paul Smith. He went onto describe his style as ‘classic with a twist’. He bought a shop in London’s then run down Covent Garden but it wasn’t such smooth sailing and he soon realised he could not afford to actually open it. Three years later he finally managed to open it and filled it with toys, gadgets, furniture designed by his creative friends and of course clothing.
More than a label, it’s a way of life…Smith went on to open a second shop in London and stores in New York and Japan soon followed. He also dabbled in women’s clothing which was met with success and made way for other launches including fragrances, watches and eventually homeware. Paul Smith for Stelton was designed to mark the 50th anniversary of Danish brand Stelton. The Dot series is made up of brushed steel bowls and dishes and combines contemporary colours with a sophisticated twist. We want one in every colour.
