Top 5 picks from Cockpit Arts Christmas Open Studios

When we heard about Cockpit Arts Open Studios in Holborn, where there are more than 160 designers who make their own jewellery, fashion, homeware, ceramics, glass and more, we had to go and take a look. Mulled wine and mince pies aside, these are our top picks from even event...

We’ve been a fan of Camilla Meijer‘s for a long time, so it was great to see this little set of shelves in her studio space (pictured above). Here you could see the whole creative process from sketches and fabric samples, to printing inks and the final cushions. The lampshade is pretty cool too.

We love a bit of letterpress so it's no surprise that we were drawn to Sort's (The Society of Revisionist Typographers) witty products. Our favourite product was the notebook with 'problems' written on the front and 'solutions' on the back . Others come with 'inspiration' and 'creation'.

We loved the detail and colour in Abigail Brown‘s birds, especially the fabulous and elegant flamingo.

Clara Breen makes intricate paper-cut jewellery like the piece pictured from maps. She says they tap into our sentimental attachments to train tickets, maps, leaflets and concert tickets – making them into something permanent. And they’re safe to wear in the rain.

And finally Shan Annabel Valla’s makeshift display cabinets are made from old packing crates - the rough edges contrast perfectly with her shiny products. Shan is an award-winning independent designer specialising in luxury interior accessories. Inspired by the familiar, she takes objects and transforms them into something new, with a playful twist. Definitely one to watch.
