Ideas for festive decorating: We wish you a stylish Christmas…

We expect your Christmas will be filled with visitors, lots of eating and drinking and of course presents. But before you can get to the big day, have you thought about how and what you're using to decorate your interior? Here are a few ideas you might like to incorporate this year.

Dress your table as beautifully as your walls. A wallpaper or wrapping paper with a metallic motif will create a sparkling setting – and the effect is sophisticated and stylish rather than Blue Peter. This is a purpose-made paper runner from Farrow & Ball (pictured above) and you can use any left over for matching wrapping paper.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the traditions, so whoever’s home for the holidays and whatever their ages, leave out refreshments for Father Christmas. These Santa-and-Rudolph-welcoming accessories are from Talking Tables, and use a classic accent shade. For an elegant alternative, you could repeat an accent from your interiors as your Christmas colour theme.

Giant, 6ft illuminated Santa on the roof? No! But yes to illumination and exterior decoration, which will make the entrance to your home look festive and inviting and perhaps a touch magical for you and your guests. These lanterns above are from Nordic House.

Interiors always look better if you work the details as well as the big picture. Christmas room schemes are no different so hang baubles from pretty ribbon, dress your mantel above and below, and include plenty of light-reflective surfaces to catch the candlelight wonderfully. Baubles and more from Ben Pentreath.

Make room for a Christmas tea, if only for the joy of dressing the table and making a centre for it. A gorgeous cake stand – this one is by Timea Sido – does the work for you so all you have to do is pile it up with a tower of treats and enjoy. Merry Christmas!
