Top 10 hallways

Don’t let your hallway be the Cinderella of your home – unappreciated and poorly dressed despite all the work it has to do. Of course, your other rooms aren’t ugly sisters, so we’ll leave the comparison there. But the point remains that both you and all your visitors see plenty of your hallway, so your interior design should make it hard wearing and fabulous.

If you don’t have a home office, why not let your hall take the strain? A stylish and slimline desk – this one’s from Dormy House (pictured above) can turn it from thoroughfare to sophisticated and useful room.

Make it smart. A striped floorcovering, such as this Sahara Ebony sisal, from Crucial Trading, creates a sophisticated impression. If your hallway lacks light, pale walls and furniture are the perfect partner to a dark floor.

A dark and narrow corridor will never make a statement, so address the lighting to turn it into a welcoming space. And it may be a cliché, but no less true for that so bear with us: mirrors will help your hall feel both bigger and lighter, and this is a modern way to use them. The fabulous and practical flooring is Engineered Oak Silver White from The Natural Wood Floor Company.

Hang a fabulous wallpaper and get a design thrill every time you pass it. Plenty of hallways have an empty wall crying out for some attention, and you don’t have to be the owner of a luxuriously large area like this one to pull off the same trick. This Verdure wallpaper is by Zoffany.

Create a view at the end of your hallway and even the narrowest of areas can have distinction. A picture gallery has a clean contemporary feel, and leading the eye along a corridor makes it feel more spacious. This flooring is from Pergo.

For a harmonious home, link you hallway colour scheme to your other rooms. We don’t mean match everything, of course, and it’d be no fun either. But we like the way the green of this Addison Stripe wallpaper from Sanderson links it to the living room beyond.

Love to make your hallway look grander? Then a monochrome scheme may be your solution even if your home is on the more-modest side of the spectrum. Make sure you don’t detract from the look with clutter. Nothing more than the temporary accommodation of shoes and bags in this pristine space should be tolerated. Flooring from Quick-Step.

Don’t cheat your hallway with your furniture choices. If you pick the less than lovely because it’s only a hall, then it will never live up to the rest of your home. A classic, like this Ercol bench, makes a fabulous feature with Graham & Brown’s Fuse Lime wallpaper as a backdrop.

Make it contemporary with a graphic-pattern runner. And a pop of bold colour is a great way to make the hall feel warm and welcoming, too. This Pappelina Vera Red rug is from Cloudberry Living.

Life can be complicated, but this hallway is a fine example of how to make it just that little bit easier. A generous amount of storage for coats and shoes leaving them accessible rather than lost in a dark cupboard plus a storage unit for other essentials keep everything where you need it. And then, step into the calm of your home and put the day behind you. Flooring from Quick-Step.
