Design Junction 2012 shines a light on hot new design

Two key trends emerged from recent exhibition Design Junction 2012, one of London Design Festival’s biggest shows. The first (and less easy to apply at home) is the growing trend to showcase shiny new design in vast, dilapidated industrial spaces. Venues like the Old Sorting Office on New Oxford Street, where Design Junction was held, and the Farmiloe Building in Clerkenwell (now a regular on the design calendar) provide a striking contrast for shiny new designs. There’s something very exciting about the juxtaposition that showcases gorgeous design pieces at their best.

The second trend – statement lighting - is a cinch by comparison. Lights are big and bold. A standard bulb covered by a boring shade just won’t cut it any more so check out these fabulous creations for some inspiration…

Bocci’s new 28d pendants looked fabulous sprawling all over the floor (pictured above) but for a more practical application suspend as many as you can from the ceiling in a cluster.

Benjamin Hubert’s prototype Tenda lights are made from the same material as tights, but we don’t recommend a DIY attempt at emulating them.

Dare Studio is doing fantastic things with copper – we loved the industrial chic feel of this lamp – another one that looks great on the floor or a table.

More rough and ready design, this time from Aditi Studios – these lightshades are all hand made and intentionally left with an unfinished aesthetic.

Lee Broom created this unique yellow version of his Crystal Bulb light especially for an auction of one-off designs inspired by “the joy of living” in aid of cancer charity Maggie’s.

Of course no lighting round-up would be complete without an entry from Anglepoise – and there’s much more to the range than just desk lamps these days.

And finally, we’re big fans of the Vitamin pendants – hand blown and only held in place by a “monkey fist” knot tied in the brightly coloured cable.
