ACHICA Living chats to deVOL about its new Air Kitchen

Founded in 1989, deVOL was set up by design graduates, Philip deVries and Paul O’Leary.  What began as as a small antique restoration company slowly grew into a flourishing business thanks to a steady stream of clients and a high quality of work. Fast forward to 2012 and deVol now have two flooring businesses, a design consultancy and still have time to make stunning kitchens.

We caught up with Robin McLellan, managing director at deVOL, about the new Air Kitchen and furniture range, launched at 100% Design.

What was the inspiration behind the design of the Air Kitchen?

The new Air range takes its inspiration from English designs of the 1930’s such as Airstream caravan. This was the era of the design engineer and we wanted to use ideas from that period and create something modern and exciting.

Talk us through the design...

From a design angle we’re very interested in materials and how they come together and being cabinet makers, our first love is timber so we tried to incorporate that with new material.

Aluminium is a strong influence throughout 1930 designs – everything from cars to an aeroplane -  so we used our experience as cabinet makers to incorporate that, so, for example, the aluminium on the inside of the cabinets is reminiscent of what you may find in an old car or a hand-built boat.

We’ve also designed floating units to give the furniture a lighter look and you can feel the space here, which makes the area feel a little bit bigger.

Are there any special features?

The way we have used aluminium and bent it together with timber is something new. It’s a traditional craft that was used with old vehicles, but it's almost becoming a lost art so we’ve tried to revive a little of that in this kitchen design.

What’s next for deVOL?

We already have a few designs we’re working on for tables and chairs and as a business we’re always pushing towards the next thing that will stand out from the watch this space!
