From the archives: Architect James Munro shares ideas for an extension on a Victorian home

When it comes to inspirational architectural design, James Munro from Granit is the man. He recently undertook a project to extend and remodel the kitchen and dining room in this large detached Victorian house in southeast London, which leads out onto a Kiwi inspired garden formed of raised decking and wild grasses. The results have us pining for the same treatment on our homes. Here he chats through this project with ACHICA Living…

What look and feel were you trying to achieve?
‘The brief was to create a flexible space that extended the kitchen and the dining room and also created a clear link with the garden. The extension also needed to provide flexibility such that this young and growing family had a functional dining room during the winter, and a light and bright space for summer entertaining.'

What was your vision?
‘To create a holistic design where both garden and building worked together to create a beautiful living environment.’

How did you reach your goal?
‘We used a striking steel and glass extension, clad in cedar louvers to control both privacy and solar gain without impeding the light. A cedar wall running from inside to out draws the eye into the Kiwi inspired garden, which features raised decking and wild grasses. The innovation in this project is the use of a large and sophisticated glass box and steel frame to create the additional room. The glazing was supplied by Cantifix.

‘There is further use of timber in the boundary wall, which extends along the full length of the extension and the garden. This was designed to give the feeling of bringing the outside into the home. The landscaped garden features a timber deck that runs the full length of the garden and is bordered by an interesting and fragrant selection of plants.’

How do you feel about the overall look?
‘The design is a simple concept, built with beautiful detailing and use of materials. It’s fair to say we’re all delighted with the results...’
