Meet Alison Johnson, who has been described as a modern-day Turner. Her work reflects experiences that explore the ‘power of nature and layers of inter-connectivity, anatomy, mortality and the fragility of life.' She loves to create work that is decorative and surreal, feminine and sometimes sculptural. ACHICA Living catches up with Alison between brush strokes...
How did you know art was your calling and how did you become an artist?
My mum is an artist, so I grew up surrounded by art, and my strongest subject at school was art, but I was discouraged from being an artist. So for many years I worked as a nurse. But I never gave up painting and exhibiting my work - over time my work as an artist became more and more demanding and thankfully it was the only and obvious thing to do.

What inspires you in your work?
Light and movement, great open spaces and intricate cityscapes - the list is endless, but there always has to be light in whatever I do. I am constantly searching for light/positivity in life and I think this shows in my work.
You've been described as a modern day Turner - how does that make you feel and what do you love about Turner's work?
It is a massive compliment. I think my work is atmospheric and dream like. I guess it’s an emotional response really. I am inspired by landscapes or cityscapes and try to translate the feeling of them onto the canvas.
What is your favourite personal painting?
My favourite painting is Soulful Warmth - the original sold very quickly, but I am pleased to be able to offer ACHICA members limited-edition prints. This painting says everything I try to convey - the warm colours suggest friendship, it is peaceful and calm and yet the viewer, I hope, will become totally absorbed within it.

Why do you think art is important?
It is an emotional portrayal of reality, or perception of reality, which allows the viewer to be absorbed and lost within it for a moment.
What is your favourite gallery space?
Those that are the small independent galleries where the owner follows your progression, thoughts and inspirations, which ultimately result in your style. I think this helps artists develop.
What advice would you give anyone wanting to become an artist?
Keep going, follow your heart, never give up, believe in yourself and push away self doubt. Thank you for taking the time to read this and wishing everyone all the best.
