The Surreal World: King of interiors Jonathan Adler on how to decorate your Christmas table

As the king of quirky interiors, Jonathan Adler has a New York store that has long been an address in the black book of international interioristas in the know. As he launches his first UK store in London’s Sloane Square, we find out his top tips for dressing your table this Christmas. And not a faux sprig of holly in sight...
The table settings set the mood. I’m really into a bit of surrealism, such as adding in random ceramic animals to the table, as they just put everyone into a really fun mood. Don’t be afraid to play with putting unexpected items in the middle of the table.

Don’t go OTT. Holiday tables should be beautiful, but that doesn’t mean over the top. I’m all for being unbridled and letting the pattern run wild, but if you’re going for a mix of prints in the accessories, set them on a plain table cloth. It will stop everything looking too crazy.

Candlelight is your best friend. A bit of low light around the table will help everything sparkle, and if people feel like they look their best, they will automatically have more fun.

Invest in some ornaments. Flowers are expensive and only last for a day or two, yet ornaments can be brought out again and again, and make a really interesting centrepiece.
