Preview The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2010
Green-fingered folk delight and get ready to mark the start of the summer with a trip to The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2010 – the world’s most famous gardening event.
We can’t wait to visit this year’s show as we know it’ll be a great place to source design ideas, enjoy and buy stunning blooms and most importantly, have a glass of vino and do some celeb spotting! We’ve had a sneaky peak at some of this year’s highlights:
DISCOVER NEW PLANT SPECIES
Chelsea is the place for plant breeders’ to launch new species in The Great Pavilion. It will be a temporary home to hundreds of different plants, cultivars and individual blooms. Impress your neighbours by dropping some new plant names into the conversation when you’re next out mowing the lawn. Expect to see:
Iris ‘Evening Drama’ from Claire Austin Hardy Plants – a dramatic combination of the blue-white standard with a stunning injection of purple.
Rosa Susan Williams-Ellis (‘Ausquirk’) from David Austin Roses – a white bloom rosette-shaped flower with a strong fragrance. It thrives in borders, hedging or a container, making it ideal for almost any garden.
STROLL AROUND THE BEAUTIFUL SHOW GARDENS
This is the one time you can have a nose over the garden fence without having to worry about the neighbours spotting you! Be inspired by the 15 hugely anticipated large show gardens from leading designers such as Tom Stuart-Smith, James Wong and Andy Sturgeon.
This year the Laurent Perrier garden will be designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, who has previously won nine gold medals. The aim is to create ‘an intimate space for entertainment or quiet reflection’. The centerpiece will be an elegant, bronze pavilion designed by award winning architect Jamie Fobert. Planting will feature a grove of Betula, River Birch, two hedges of cloud pruned box, Euphorbias as well as Blue Iris siberica to contrast with the darkness of the bronze.
This year’s Eden Project entry promises to be spectacular and will feature a number of zones for crops and food, floristry and leisure, medicine and health, industry and manufacture, conservation and the environment, all of which the designers say ‘act as a metaphor for the hidden treasures that lie within communities in the most unexpected places’.
There will also be 21 small courtyard and urban gardens to enjoy too. Look out for the Green&Black’s Rainforest Garden that highlights the plight of the rainforest and struggles of its Cameroonian women.
We can’t wait to see David Domoney’s Ace of Diamond’s garden too, which will have garden walls made up of £100k’s worth of semi-precious stone cut from rock face and back lit to show the effect. Bring on the bling!
